Who do you say I am?

According to Roy Zuck, in his book, ‘Teaching as Jesus Taught’, Jesus asked 225 different questions. To be honest, I haven’t counted them, so I will have to take his word for it.

Interestingly, Zuck says that Luke records more questions than the other gospel writers and, he writes that, “…all fifty-one questions in the Gospel of John occur nowhere else…”

Questions were clearly an important part of Jesus’ teaching technique. If we looked at all of them, this would prove to be a long series. However, I only intend to highlight a few of the more significant ones over the next few weeks.

Perhaps His most important question was posed to Peter: “…Who do you say I am…”(Matthew 16:15).

Peter’s response has become justifiably famous: “…You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God…” (Matthew 16:16).

In his answer, Peter was not simply parroting the crowd, who thought Jesus was one of the prophets, nor was he expressing a personal opinion; he was confessing a direct revelation from God.

And it was this revelation and confession that proved to be the cornerstone of his faith and the foundation of the church. It is this revelation that is also the keystone to our faith, our identity, and our ministry.

Do we regularly confess Who Jesus is?

Do we understand that we are who we are in Him?

Do we base our ministry on His identity?
